Gratitude Steps

I cannot take one step without deep gratitude, without acknowledging what a miracle a simple step is. I think about the thousands of processes that are occurring and have occurred that allow me to take this single step. From the plethora of systems in my body: the miracle that all I have to do is think about it, or maybe even barely think about it at all and my body orchestrates a million tiny processes to complete the movement. Do you know how complex the orchestration of a thought is? The thousands of functions that come together in a fraction of a fraction of a second. The proteins and enzymes and whatever else that each perform an intricate and specific function to release a neurotransmitter in the brain to communicate the thought. Somehow, faster than the speed of light, the thought, the intention to move gets from the ethers where it began, through the synapses of the brain, into the nervous system and signals the muscles, the organs, the heart, the lungs, to coordinate their processes to pick up the foot and the leg to pick it up and place it down. Can you fathom the coordination of all of these functions? Each and every step is a miracle of the intricacy of life. It is a celebration of all the tiny functions that come together to accomplish a goal. If the body really were managed by tiny project managers and workers to facilitate these functions then they would deserve a celebration for every orchestration, every movement. Thinking about all the functions of my body that come together for my every move, my every intention, allows me to recognize the miracle that is my body. The mind expands to try to take it all in and a reverence is created.
