Deep Gratitude: A Miracle Beneath My Feet

I dig deep for gratitude, not just the obvious surface things. Today I will start with the base, the foundation, the earth, dirt, soil. What a miracle is soil, not just dirt, not just mud but an intricate harmony of elements that come together in a unfathomable symphony of complexity and perfectly orchestrated functions and processes to create just one of the many foundational elements that support physical life on earth. Just think about it and the mind expands to encompass the vastness of the miracle that is soil, that is life. It is not just dirt. It is a symphony of elements perfectly interwoven to produce life. It is a miracle beyond our comprehension. The tiny things that my eyes cannot see. The complex inter dynamics that my mind does not yet know and would barely understand. Who tells the microbes to create nitrogen from the root of the plant? Who tells the fungi to do whatever they are doing? How can all these brainless microorganisms work together to create the perfect conditions so that a plant can grow so that we can eat it? Think about all that goes on below the surface to support your life. And it continues in an endless cycle. Soil is ever renewing, it gives and then it is replenished in an ever ongoing cycle. Giving and receiving.

When I acknowledge this seemingly mundane thing, I can feel that I am supported by miracles at the most basic level. At a level that is right in front of my face but deeply hidden from my regular view. In acknowledging this basic miracle that is at every moment beneath my feet, then I can attune my perception to the countless other miracles that are all around me, in my past, present and future. I can trust in the harmony of life to support and sustain me.
